City council approved Austin’s federal legislative agenda Thursday including $350,000 for Austin Police Department to install and monitor surveillance cameras for high crime areas including downtown Austin and the Sixth Street entertainment district specifically. In a conversation with Chief Acevedo, he mentioned that the cameras should be called “monitoring cameras” rather than surveillance cameras as they are passive monitors of the area. If the city is awarded the Federal grant money, Council would still need to approve any purchases.
